My starter on my truck will work some times but most of the time it won't crank over just makes a grinding noise?

It could be that the starter pinion drive (also known as the bendix) is worn. If it is grinding and rotating slowly then the bushings are worn. In either case, you neep to overhaul or replace the starter.

Ok thanks for the answer I will try that. I think I will take the starter out and have it tested. Because It starts every once in a while so it is turning over
