1988 Chevy S-10 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive

My friend has a 88 Chevy S-10 that will only start when he shoots carb cleaner into the throttle body. It seems that the injectors aren't spraying but fuel is getting into the throttle body. What could be the problem?

Hi:
Are you sure the truck has multi port injection or just TBI? I can't remember on the 88's Regardless, they must be working if the car stays running. Please explain.
