2001 Chevrolet Malibu Repair Question

2001 Chevy Malibu
Computer problem
2001 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 124000 miles
Recently my door locks and trunk release button have stopped working. The dealership told me that I need a new ECU. The doors will lock when put in drive but will not work with the lock switch or remote. If the ECU is faulty would that cause this problem? If so would a new or used ECU be the way to go? Would it be a easy install by yourself to do? Would the locks and stuff start working right away or does it need to be programmed?
Sorry so many questions

Are they sure the ECM is the problem? If so, if you can find one with the exact same part number from a salvage yard, you'll save a lot of money. Things will need reprogramed to recognize your ignition / fob...
