is there a way to get around the theft system without having to replace the ignition switch?

You need to follow this to the T, or you'll scratch the computer security code and you'll have to get it reprogrammed at the dealership. Disassemble the steering column plastic housing, and on the bottom of the column there should be a grey wire, with a male-female wire connection. Put your keys in and start the car, make sure the Theft System light is off. Once ensured car is okay, unplug the grey wire under the column. Once unplugged with the car running, the computer will know that it's been bypassed. -Warning- If your battery runs dead, gets disconnected, or the car loses all battery power one way or another, the car WILL have to be programmed at the dealer. Reversal is the exact same. Start the car, let it idle, and reconnect the wire.

You wont need to get it reprogramed at the dealer, there is a manual way of reprogramming. I highly suggest not bypassing the security
