I have a 1997 Lumina 3100, 4 door sedan. It has about 160, 00 miles on it. My check engine soon light has come on and stays on all the time. My temp guage shows that the car gets hot if the heat is turned on. When the heat is off it doesn't get hot. Can this be the thermostat? I recently had an alternator replaced, and a new key and ignition switch added. Could this have anything to do with the heat guage? I am having to replace coolant because of a small leakage somewhere (don't know where it is leaking). Winter is here and I need to use the heater.

Two things you must do, 1.) Get the cooling system pressure tested to find the leak, 2.) Have the codes red to determine what is stored in the PCM, probably has a little to do with the overheating, and it won't hurt to see if the cooling fan comes on when you turn on the heat.
