Cleaning of the manifold sensor

Hi,
I have a problem with my N reg fiesta 16v. The car starts fine but then shortly after starting the revs start to drop until it cuts out (if you drive it off straight away this happens at the first junction). When it is restarted, whiich usually needs to be assisted by a bit of gas, it then runs fine and will do so for the rest of the day. However, it is also running very hot and I am worried that damage is being done.
I have been told by a mechanic that I spoke to that the first port of call would be checking and cleaning the manifold sensor. Is this true? If so could I, as an inexperienced person, do it myself? where is it found?
If it is not possible to do would it be a major job to send into a mechanic?

As it happens I am selling the car soon so I am just looking to iron out these problems before I try and do so. Any advice would be great.

Thanks
Jay
