service traction system light comes on, what is usally the problem and is a costly fix, or something simple?

It is hard to say. It is a system, not a single unit. For proper diagnostic, you need to have the ABS module scanned for codes, and then we'll go from there. Your regular basic OBD-ii scanner won't do, you need to find a shop or someone that has an ABS scanner.
