2001 Chevy Impala clicking!!

My 2001 Impala has had a steering clicking sound. Initially it was when you turned left now it is right and left. The GM mechanic we frequent says it is a common occurence with the Impala. He also states that to fix the clicking sound/feeling is at a cost of~1200.00. Nothing functionally is wrong. Just wondering what your opinion is about this. I have the car up for sale so I don't want to mislead a prospective buyer. Please help.
