2001 Chevy Impala 6 cyl Automatic 144000 miles

My car won't start intermittently. It will start 20 times perfectly and then this happens: Engine turns over, but chokes and "chugs and sputters" badly. Press on gas, nothing happens. The car shakes and sometimes smells like it is burning something, oil maybe? It will hesitate cranking up and just die when it turns over, or it will turn over and will struggle to stay alive and eventually wind up dying. The tachometer swings wildly and the engine chugs horribly like there are pockets of air interrupting the flow of gas to the engine. Have taken it to the dealership and other mechanic 4 or 5 times in the past couple months. No one knows the problem. No codes being thrown, fuel pump, injectors cleaned, replaced fuel filter, replaced spark plugs, has a fairly new catalytic converter. I don't believe its the passlock system because the car seems to be sparking just not getting fuel and like I said not everytime does it do this.
