Heater not working

The heater no longer blows warm/hot air on my 2002 Chevy Impala. The speeds work, but just blows cold air. What could be the problem? Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there,

If you haven't fixed the problem already, here are a few suggestions:
-Make sure your coolant is at proper level in your radiator (ENGINE COLD) and inside your overflow tank.
-If coolant is at proper level, let's look at your thermostat: Is your engine long to warm up? If so this would be a sign of a thermostat that is stuck open. Another tip: when you start your car in the morning, or whenever the engine is cold, grab the upper radiator hose with your hand; if you can feel coolant flowing thru it, you know for sure your thermostat is bad. Replace it (a new one runs around $5 + coolant).
-Ok, let's say your thermostat is okay. Let's look at your heater core: Turn your car on and let it reach normal operating temperature. Then turn the heat on high. Now feel both heater hoses in the engine compartment (they are small rubber hoses hooked to the firewall behind the engine). Both hoses should feel very hot. If one hose is cold or lukewarm, your heater core is probably clogged. You need to flush your cooling system. If flushing doesn't fix your problem, a new heater core will be necessary.

We flushed and back flushed heater core. When at a idle good heat. When driving no heat. Engine temp only slightly changes due to cold temp.

Heater problem
2001 Chevy Impala Engine Size unknown Front Wheel Drive Automatic 132000 miles

We have replaced the resistor about 4-6 wks ago and now it is not working again. I drove my car that morning with heat just not very strong when on 5. Then I went to the car wash and noticed a small leak under the dash, unknown from where. Then went to store but when I came out it was not working. It has been 4 days now and yet still not working. I dont have a tester to test anything so Im unsure of the problem or where to start. I did see that there is a wire hanging down last time the resistor was replaced and not sure where it goes, if anywhere.
Please help its cold in Indiana and the car places like to rip everyone off up here.

Before the car wash was working after the car wash u went to store came out from store and it didn’t work +
its very cold where you live
is it cold enough for water to freeze up and prevent the motor from turning since you had a leak around that area

See if your coolant level is low. Make sure your thermostat is operating properly. You should see a temp around 180-210 degrees.

Check your antifreeze level first, low coolant will cause this as the heater core is the first to lose the volume.

My heater will not work, hot air will blow through the vents but only at around 50 mph. When I change the levels of flow nothing happens.

Check your level of coolant and add some if necessary.
Make sure there's no leak.
Replace thermostat.
If you never serviced your cooling system, I strongly suggest you do it now. GM dexcool coolant lasts up to 5 years/150,000 miles, so it would be overdue.

Engine Cooling problem
2001 Chevy Impala 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 140k miles

My car just started to over heat and the heat started to blow cold. I checked the coolant and it was low so I filled it but then I had to fill it twice in two days. There is a whistle like sound that is coming from the engine and I don't think that the fans are on. The smoke out of the tail pipe is coming out in spurts and looks white. The temp. Gauge is going up and down and then all the way to the red. Any ideas?

Replace the thermostat that don't cut it-get it block and pressure tested-sounds like its overheating due to a stuck closed thermostat that probably blew the headgasket or cracked head or block

:( 2001 chrysler town & country, no heat while driving. But if you stop
and park vehicle while running, temp gage goes to normal and I have blowing heat. Once you start driving temp gage goes to cold and then start blowing cold air. Again, if van is parked and running temp gage is normal until you start driving. HELP PLEASE!

I signed on to postv the exact same question on my 2000 Grand Caravan ES. Same thing - driving - no heat and parked the temp. Gage goes up and heat. My check engine light is on in yellow mode.

I dont have the check engine light on yet.
If put your key in the ignition, turn it three times quickly, it will register the code in the instrument panel. Once you have the code it's a matter of finding what the code means, and you can find that from this site as well or if you have an auto zone near you you can take your vehicle there and the will put it on their machine and diagnose it for you, but your check engine light has to be on when they check it. Ok where are you two, what reigon. How is your anti freeze ratio. If its less than 50% or more than 60% and its real cold. Air temp and speed does have a affect on the radiator. You see the big rigs with the winter fronts on for a reason. To keep the heat. Good luck
