2006 Chevy Colorado Transmission won't go into park

2006 Chevy Colorado Four Wheel Drive Automatic 45000 miles
Transmission won't go into park. It hapenned spontaneously after trying to shift it in 3rd gear because I hadn't used those gears in a while (automatic transmission).
Just wondering what could cause this?

depending won where your shifter is, column or floor. the floor has a cable and a clip could have come off or broken or the cable it self. If it's a column then the linkage could be bent.
