Engine Mechanical problem
1995 Chevy Cheyenne Four Wheel Drive Manual 97,000 miles
I have a 95 stick shift Chevy 2500 truck with 97,000 that will intermittently stall and sputters at times. I use it mainly to haul my horses once a week. I have to pump the gas to start the engine ( I have the clutch all the way in). The problem occurs when I am idling or going less than 28 miles an hour. Above 28mph and It runs smooth expecially over 40 miles an hour, no problems. I run into the stalling at an idle or down shifting especially if I am turning the wheel (using power steering) while downshifting. Sometimes it will idle at 800rpms at a stop light but sometimes it immediately will idle down and stall at a stop light. It also will stall if I am idling and I turn on the headlights or air conditioning. A mechanic friend thought it was an a/c condenser fan problem and replaced it but that didn't change anything. I went to Advanced auto parts where they checked the battery and alternator and said they were fine. The person there suggested using choke/carborator cleaner, replacing the ignition coil, distributor cap, spark plugs and wires and a few other things I am forgetting. The dealer wanted to put in a laundry list of things like replacing the fuel pump, fuel lines and other unnecessary repairs. What do you think I should start with?
