A 396 is an internally balanced engine.

366,396,402,427 big blocks are all internally balanced the 454 is externally balanced.
The 265,283 302,307,327,350 small blocks are internally balanced a 400 small block is externally balanced.
Most of the new crate engines from the dealerships are externally balanced.
DO NOT use a harmonic balancer for an externally balanced engine on a internally balanced engine and vise-a-versa.
