Engine Performance problem

My mother has a 1998 Chevy Cavalier, I'm not sure of the mileage. The check engine light came on a few days ago, along with the ETS light. The car began to run rough and use more gas than normal. Now the car will turn over but not start. Before it quit starting she took it to checker and they told her that the error they were getting was "random misfire" Any ideas on what this might be? Thanks!
