1989 Chevy Cavalier Service engine soon & smoke

1989 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Automatic 87,000 miles

My "service engine soon" light came on recently, and at the same time that came on I noticed black smoke coming from my muffler. I replaced the spark plugs but I don't know what else to do. The car is running just like normal but i'm afraid it's only a matter of time.

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.
