2005 Chevy Avalanche engine coolant temp.

I got a an OBD 2 code reader and it says po116 10/02 now the book it came whith says engine coolant temp CKT range/performance what is CKT range performance is. Gust need and a brefing on this problem. And the water temp gage don't work.

P0116....Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range/Performance Problem, could be out of range -bottom line the ECT is not doing its job could be the sensor/wiring or the PCM itself.

Temperature gauge inoperative might be the temperature switch
