Can I replace the in-tank fuel pump with an external one?

My 2000 Asto Cargo has had problems with the fuel pump, it has been replaced 3 times so far. It has 121k miles on it. Can I leave the bad pump inside the tank and mount/install a new pump outside the tank? Many european cars have external pumps (Bosch), can I use one of those, what is the min. pressure I need, has anyone done this. This seems to be a design problem.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

Have you ever changed FUEL FILTERS?? I do that religeously 10 to 15K as they get clogged up real fast!! A pump will burn itslelf out if it has to work hard...and it will.. trying to suck fuel thru a clogged filter! Never go below 1/4 tank as the pump has to be cooled by the fuel...it gets hot in there.
Keep the filter new...
