Recently bought 1997 chevy astro no warranty.
wife went to the store and said service eng. Soon light was flashing and van was sputtering/missing?
What could this be?

I don't know exactly, but whatever it turns out to be it could be or is destroying you catalitic converter! Get those codes read quick! Autozone and othe big chain parts stores do it free! Hurry! Then post the result here.
