When we turn on the van and travel 45 minutes one way and another 45 minutes another way the heater has a mind of its own and does not out out any heat just air. How can I fix this problem

Make sure the coolant level is full. Also, is the engine running at a normal operating temp when this happens? Finally, with the engine hot, running, and the heater on hi, do both heater core hoses get hot when there is no heat.
