I have to replace my catalytic converter since have the dreaded PO420 code. I purchased the cat (Magnaflow) direct fit, the catalytic converter is encased with a silver piece of aluminum, is this the heat shield? and secondly how important is the heat shield? this question is for my own knowledge. can it go installed for a period of time without one?

Good afternoon,

Yes, that is the heat shield.

You need to install it. It is there to prevent debris from hitting the converter when driving and parked so it does not catch fire.

It is also there to keep the heat at the converter for proper operation.
