Car not starting, when charged with battery, it starts, won't start again though and cuts out when moving

The car was working fine today from work, left it on the drive and opened up with key fob, as normal, when I turned on the ignition it made a clicking sound and the needles on the speedometer flickered but there was no power, all the warning lights came on for oil etc like it normally would when starting but nothing fires up. Was given a jump start and left it running for a few minutes before trying to drive but only got as far as round the corner before it cut out again. Got it going again and gave it a good spin but it cut out again, even after it had been running for a while. Not sure what is the problem with it but it seems to work fine when connected to another battery, even when the car it is being charged from is not running. Random warning lights coming on about faulty breaks too which it doesn't normally do. The car has been running smoothly since I got it in February, this is the first problem I have had with it, but no warning lights have been displayed for the battery being low or any form of light to indicate there might be a problem starting.

Clean and tighten the battery terminals.
Have the charging system checked. Sort of sounds like a faulty alternator which is killing the battery)

Hi Sue. Did you manage to get it fixed? A similar thing has happened to me today - when I tried to start the car, all 4 needles on the dashboard started ticking in unison, from the "zero" mark, with approx 10 degree displacement of the needles. Needles constantly ticking, plus there is a similar sound coming from the engine bay. Very, very strange.
