The EGR valve mounts to the rear of the water pump housing, and is held on w/2bolts/studs. My question is: is the egr valve mounting base threaded or does it drop on the studs? How can I remove it? How do I open or clean the egr valve after I take it off?

The studs act as the holddown bolts, and are threaded into the water pump housing. In some cases you need to loosen the fuel injector rail to get it off the stud w/o kinking the line. Cleaning the valve has a low success rate, and usually results in a repeat failure. Replacement is the preferred method.
