About a month ago we filled our car with some cheap gas while away on a trip. After driving about 160 miles and about 20 miles from reaching home the car started to buck and lose power. It kept getting worse until the engine finally stalled while sitting at a red light. I was able to get it started and we made it home, even though the car bucked and misfired all the way home. We brought the car to our local mechanic. He did all the diagnostics and told us he found nothing wrong with it and concluded that we had just gotten a bad tank of gas that contained too much ethanol and water. We put a can of dry gas and filled it with good quality gas and it drove fine for awhile. A few weeks later we had another episode where the car started to buck, lose power, and eventually stalled. After 30-40 minutes of attempting to start the car and putting more gas and dry gas in the tank I was able to start it. And again, it drove fine for a week and then we had a third episode where the car did the same thing and stalled at a red light. Each time I was able to re-start the car by putting a can of dry gas in the tank and continually turning the car over until it started.

Last night the car stalled again for the fourth time and I was unable to get it to start even after putting another can of dry gas in the tank. It just keeps cranking over, but will not start, as if there is no gas in the tank which is 3/4 full.

Could the gas filter be clogged and if so, is that something I can fix myself? I have some experience working on cars and I am mechanically inclined.

OR

Could there be a problem with the fuel injectors? And if so, would the addition of a bottle or two of injector cleaner be recommended?

I'd use a gage and check fuel pressure. Sometimes the autostore will loan out a tester. You should be able to change the filter yourself. I don't have the exact location. My info says to raise and safely support the vehicle. I'd start looking back by the gas tank, follow the fuel line. Make sure there is no pressure on the system, before you take anything loose, loosen the gas cap. Sometimes gas will still try to run out of the lines, I just plug them with whatever is handy till I'm ready to go back with new filter. If you use a droplite, watch out where you place it.

The partsbook showed the above picture. You might try some seafoam in the gas tank, follow the directions.
