Air Conditioning problem
2001 Cadillac El Dorado V8 120K miles

When I turn on the AC in my 2001 El Dorado, it blows hot long after clearing the standing air from the ducts. Turn off the engine (but not AC), restart the car, and cool air may emerge -- or not. Fan and compressor work fine; freon is topped off; compressor kill switch functions properly. Suggestions, solutions?

You probably have an actuator that is overtraveling, and defaulting to hot. This should be accompanied with a trouble code, you have no indication of a present code in that system. Enter on-board diagnostics by the following:

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Displaying
Perform the following steps in order to display the DTCs using the on-board diagnostic method:

"Â For analog IPC, press OFF and PASSENGER WARMER together.

Press the LO (fan speed) button until ACM? Appears.
Press the HI (fan speed) button until ACM CODES? Appears.
Press the HI (fan speed) button until ACM DTC appears.

What this doesn't say is, after all codes have displayed once and PCM? Is displayed, then use lo fan to get you to ACM? Press fan up to select, and then fan down to find ACM CODES, then fan up to display them.
