2000 Cadillac DTS

I have a 2000 Cadillac Sedan Deville DHS. The gas guage reads empty or full. Could it possibly be a defective gas guage or maybe a gas guage sender in the dash? It showed it had gas the other day but then ran out of gas in the middle of a smog test. Do you know what maybe causing this?
