I have a 2001 Sedan Deville with 133,390 miles that continues to overheat, I have replaced the thermostat yet the antifreeze does not exit the reservior and into the radiator and ultimately the engine block. Could I possibly have a defective water pump or is there a signal needed to open the thermostat to permit the antifreeze to flow?

thermostat is opened by temperature of the coolant. are the uper and lower radiator hoses both hot if so its unlikely that its a bad water pump, a bad ignition timing could cause the engien to run hot

find the leak, if no coolant in resivor, will damage headgaskets if not already damaged
