1993 Cadillac Deville service engine soon light

recently bought car & light has started coming on. have had 2 mechanics check it out & it still comes on. replaced fuel filter & egr solenoid (thought it was vacuum problem)
problem is: the light coming on is NOT leaving a code for them to troubleshoot!
car has died on hiway once & gas mileage continues to suffer.
any ideas what to check for? mechanic says it's good to drive, but i don't trust it!

there not telling the truth, you scan for codes and write them down, push off and warmer on the heater control panel, with key in the on posision, post them here for me
