1995 Cadillac Brougham stops running

1995 Cadillac Brougham V8 Front Wheel Drive Automatic
replaced alternator & battery. when hooking up battery, there r 4 cables. they seem to only work backwards. also, when hooking up battery, there is the sound of some type of motor running-without the key being in the ignition. car goes around the block, then stops.
