I would like to know how to tell if the whizzing noise I hear, is coming from the alternator or power steering unit? It most likely is a worn bearing. I drive a 1993 buick riviera with the 3.8 engine. Any suggestions on this?

Try using a stethescope to pinpoint the source. You can use a plastic handled prybar or long screwdriver if you don't have one. Place your ear on the handle and the blade on the component to narrow it down. The noisy bearing should be evident. When you narrow it down, pull the belt and spin the pullies by hand and feel for roughness.
