I've had a similar problem with my 1987 lesabre

I cant tell exactly where your problem is, but if it seems hesitant when you gas or seems rough on idle.
I'd check the MAF Sensor (Mass Airflow Sensor); the plastic module connecting between throttle body and airfilter box. They cost around $80 at some autoparts stores and you can bring the old one back to them for around $10

Is it missing spark when it is dead? Verify this first.
