Engine Cooling problem
1994 Buick Century 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a '94 Buick Century and my check engine light came on. I was driving up a slight hill and I felt somthing jerk within the engine and I lost a lot of power. The engine was still running and I was hitting the gas, but it only went about 15 miles per hour. So I pulled over and popped the hood I saw some smoke coming from somewhere around the front of the engine. So I cut it off. I'd had trouble with the car overheating before and I thought I'd fixed it, but my radiator was empty. I think I may have a bad hose and thermostat, I'm not sure. So I put more antifreeze in and drove it home. The orange/yellow check engine light stayed on but overall it seemed fine, I didn't get much past 35 miles per hour on the way home though. When I got home the hoses and radiator wasn't as hot as it should have been. What could be causing the problem? I'd like to get some idea of it before I take it in to someone.
