My brake service light just came on. The dealer says I need to spend over $1000 to replace all 4 brake pads and rotors. They say they cannot replace pads alone; I need to save money so I want to do the job myself can you help me please?

Hi,

Replacing front brake pads and rotors really isn't too hard. You can expect to get around 25,000 miles from a set of pads, but that is based on driving habits and terrain. Changing them yourself can save you a lot. If you get lifetime parts from a parts store and do it yourself, you shouldn't have to pay for brake pad replacement again.

First, here is a link that shows in general how the process is done:

Here are the directions specific to your vehicle. The attached pics correlate with the directions.

Remove outer brake lining.
Inner brake lining is located with its spring in the piston.

Important: Mark any worn brake linings.

In the event of one-sided brake lining wear, do not change brake linings round.
New brake linings may only be installed if the brake disk thickness is greater than or equal to the minimum brake disk thickness (MIN TH).
Observe minimum thickness of brake linings,
Clean brake linings.
Do not grease backs of brake linings sleeve.

Check dust sleeve (1) for damage and replace if necessary.
Clean contact face (2) of brake piston and apply a thin coating of anti-squeak compound.

Important: Dust sleeve must not come into contact with anti-squeak compound as this may cause the dust sleeve to swell.
