How do you turn off the check engine light?

There are several ways and they all involve using some form of scanning device. There are several generic OBDII scanners out there that cost less than an hour at the dealer. I suggest that there may be a reason the lamp has been commanded on, that will need to be corrected first, do you have any idea why the light is on?
