Recently, the "check engine" light went on on the control panel. No where in the manual is there any information as to what this means, and what to do about it. Can you help? And will I do any damage to the engine by driving the car?

This means there is a stored trouble code on your vehicle's computer. Take your vehicle to a local auto part shop and ask them to scan your vehicle for engine codes. Most will do this for free. Post the code(s) you get here and I will let you know what they mean. Sometimes its as simple as a harmless sensor, sometimes more serious. If its something serious you would notice it though (rough idle, bad shifts etc.).
