Cd changer/head unit problem

1997 BMW 840 V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 37000 miles
i bought my 840 and discovered there was a problem with the cd player. it has a 6cd changer in boot and usual head unit for model. cd changer loads up cds from cartridge fine but upon selecting 'cd mode' when in the car the head unit dislays message: 'cd error'
i bought a new changer unit and cartridge but the same thing happens, which leads me to believe the problem is with the head unit/ wiring. do you have any suggestions please?
