I have a 98 e38 740iL with one remote key. Now I want to get a spare but they are expensive. My friend told me that he can get my an uncut key brand new OEM with the transponder. He said I could get it cut by a locksmith and program it myself with instructions online. ( I did find a few directions online but do not know if they will work) Is this possible? Or does BMW have a special machine that needs to program these keys? Is there anyway around it? Thank You

The transponder in the key is coded to the car, only keys coded to the car will allow it to start, and it might need to be unblocked to allow functionality. To my knowledge, only the central letter shop has this ability, and they are captive to BMW North America. So a new key should be obtained through the proper channels, that is my humble opinion.
