I have a 1998 BMW 740iL and I need an Instrument Cluster because my pixels on my odometer reading is shot. Should I buy a pre-owned unit and if I do will it be able to be coded to my car? Or, should I buy a new one? Where should I buy a pre-owned unit or a new unit besides at a BMW dealership?

Once the instrument is "married" to the car, it can't be used in another vehicle. That does not mean you can't do it, it just means that if you do, you are "stuck" with whatever mileage the replacement cluster has, and the manipulation dot will be illuminated, no biggie if you document it with an easy to follow paper trail through the wonderful land of the DMV, but an embarrassment none the less in the resale world. A new cluster uncoded from the dealer is $$ and it will be able to be written with the cars' actual mileage. Factor in coding at additional cost.
