1983 BMW 733i will turn but want run

Engine Mechanical problem
1983 BMW 733i 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 150000 miles

the car turns good but shuts off when i release the ignition

I'm not sure I understand you, are you saying the car runs? The starter cranks it over but it doesn't actually start? Please clarify.
