The fault needs to be examined by an expert, it may require a rebuild kit for the DSC.

There are several reasons why the light may come on. The DSC is the least likely reason. Mine was removed years ago and the ABS light has just begun coming on intermittantly (oh yeah!) If you google 'e39 ABS light" you will come across several BMW threads discussing the particulars, which are too long to relate here. You can even replace the ABS module yourself for a fraction of the dealer's price (modulemaster. Com)

You could replace the module, but then there is coding the unit to the car which requires a GT-1 or an SSS station. An expert answer would include this information.
