1990 BMW 525i Repair Question

Shift lever not engaging
Transmission problem
1990 BMW 525i 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 260000 miles
My shift lever won't engage on it supposed to be Marked Parking, R-reverse, N-Neutral D-Drive...etc. Its currently engage in Drive.
The panel shows the shifter is moving on its proper location but actually no engaging.
THe engine can be started but you must step on the brake in order not to move forward.
