I recently bought a 2000 BMW 328i with 83K miles, 6 cyl AT. It started making a loud whining noise when first started in the morning. Once warmed up the noise went away. Local retail auto repair checked alternator and thought it could possibly be going out. I bought used alternator and installed it and the car won't start. Everything powers up when I turn the key, lights, dash, starter cranks fine but seems like it is not getting fuel. Shouldn't it start even with a bad alternator? By the way, the loud whining noise is still there when I turn key on. One other thing is that the coolant has been coming on and off for a few days before changing the alternator. Coolant level is full and no leaks. Possible water pump going out? Any help is appreciated!

Should start with a bad alt if the battery is fully charged. Makes the noise key on, but not running? Might have an electric AIR pump that is running first thing. If it has to be running to make the noise, remove drive belt and start it to see if the noise is engine related or accessory related

Your cold start noise is probably the deflection pulley bearing beginning to fail. Pressure test the cooling system and cap. Check the coolant level sensor and the expansion tank.
