Recently purchased leased bimmer model 328i with automatic and 14800 miles. Picked up from dealer yesterday, drove home and around less than 100 miles with no problems off on several timesno problems howedver, we now have the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator light come on and stay on even after starting the car. What do you suggest is wrong and what should we do about it. The dealer is 45 miles away and it is a BMWcertified used car. Will it hurt to drive the car. Thank you.

No, it will not cause any harm to drive the car with a check engine light on. If it were causing any driveability issues or if the light is flashing then I would say do not drive the car. The problem could be something as simple as a loose or incorrectly replaced fuel cap. Also, you may not need to go all the way back to where you bought it, Autozone and several of the big chain auto parts suppliers will scan the car for you and if it is a fault that says: Major leak detected, it is the gas cap just being loose and they will reset it for you if you ask nice!

Checked gas cap and it was lying loose in the refueling area. Put the cap back onto the fuel inlet area, tightened it na drecycled starting and turning off the engine five times over a period of twnety minutes. The light is still on how much longer will it take to go off thank you
