What are the mechanical symptoms of clutch failure in a BMW.

When I push on the clutch pedal it feels normal but gearshift will not move. Does this mean I need to replace the clutch in the vehicle?

A clutch can fail in several ways, it can start to make noise when the throw-out bearing fails or it can lose the friction material and not engage or the clutch hydraulics can fail and the pedal just goes to the floor. What is yours doing?
