2001 BMW 316 Repair Question

White smoke
Engine Mechanical problem
2001 BMW 316 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 40000 miles
The fan belt snapped in the car and when I took it to be repaired the mechanic said it happened due to a bad water pump. Anyway changed both and later in the evening it was difficult to start the car....very rough idle and white smoke from the exhaust. After a few minutes the idle smooths out and the white smoke disappears when the car warms up and the engine runs real smooth. No loss in power or overheating.
Could coolant have gotten into the engine when the water pump was changed? Should I change oil? plugs?
