1997 BMW 316 Parking brake attachment to backplate

Parking shoes are attached by spring clips to a backplate. The retaining holes are worn and the backplates need replacing. Looks like the drive shafts may need removing before the plates can be replaced.
Is this true and if so what is involved in replacing the plates. Basically is it a DIY job

You will need special tools to do the job. A slide hammer to remove the hub and possibly both rear wheel bearings as they can get destroyed when coming apart. Special tools are needed th install the bearing and to pull the hub into the bearing.
