2002 Audi Quattro knocking sound and smoke from turbo

2002 Audi Quattro 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 63000 miles
Hi. Can anyone give me some free advice please. Recently got an audi a3 s3 quattro. Had a full service done, repllaced both rear coil springs and timing belt e.t.c. Now I notice that smoke come from of the turbo whenever I put my foot down, smells a t bit also. My mechanic says that the turbo can do this, it also seems to get very hot. In addition i hear knocking noises when I am in 1st and 2nd gear, and a little in 3rd. Any one help please ?
