2001 Audi Quattro engine noise

When the engine is cold and you start it up, there is a howling noise that occurs for the first 30 seconds or so. As the engine warms, this goes away. It then is intermittent, but at much lower is almost inaudable decible. It occactionally returns when making left turns, but it goes away immediately.

It is not related to the air handling system as the noise occurs when the a/c and heating is turned off.

Is this a belt problem? Is this related to the power steering? Or is it a hole in some diaphram that closes as the engine heats up?
