Speedometer vss wiring

1996 Audi Cabriolet 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 140000 miles
The 2 wires which go to my VSS are broken off about 6" from the VSS. A simple fix would be to dress and insert new wires, but I don't don't know the route the wires take from the speedometer to the sensor. I've not been able to locate the other end of the two wires, 1 brown and 1 brown-red. I have a Bentley with the wiring diagram, but finding 13 year old greasy wires with not much line-of-sight access is tough. Any hints on where to look?
