Hello,

I just purchased a 1999 Audi A6 Quattro 2.8 in June and I had some work done to it; I replaced the water pump, pulleys and cam gasket seal amongst other things. Just recently I heard a very loud noise coming from the engine. The weather was very cold so I let the car warm up for about 10 minutes and the noise seem to get quieter. It’s like that every morning and it sounds like it is getting worse. I took the car to a local mechanic and was told I needed a new engine but then a friend of mine (who is male) took it to a different mechanic and they said it did not sound like it was the engine. Now I am confused and don’t know if the first mechanic was trying to rip me off because I am a female and know nothing about cars or if I do indeed need a new engine.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions!

Thank you.

Hi:
can you describe the noise and where it's coming from?

Hi,

It sounds like it is coming from the front of the car. The noise sounds like the fan is rubbing against metal. I also noticed it feels like the car is struggling when I put the gear in Drive. A co-worker of mine heard the car while running and he says it's one of my pulleys. So now I am really lost; I called around and everyone is charging $100 to check the car for me, money that I do not have.

Thank you for your time.

Hi:
If you think it may be a belt, take a small amount of water and pour it on the belt when the car is running. Se if there is any change in the sound. Does the sound change with RPM's? Also, are you losing any coolant?

Thanks! I will try that tonight. I have not noticed any leaks. I replaced the water pump and pulley back in June when I first purchased the car.
