1989 Audi 90 Front Wheel Drive Manual

hello i was wondering i just put in a new ignition switch and as i was drivin my wires started to melt i replaced the wires the melted with new ones but when i touch the battery wire to the starter wire they both get very hot very quick just wondering what might be wrong.
